How To Start a Coaching Business

How to start a coaching business

My journey

When I was at the beginning of my journey, I found it really hard to find high quality and concise information about how someone like me (a 20 year old black female) could get into a career as a life coach. However, the fact that you’re reading this is evidence that I figured it out (duh).

So in todays post I’ll be sharing how I got here, and how you can get your life coaching business going, despite your age or background.

The thing that many people don’t realise is that it’s an unregulated field; meaning you don’t need a specific (or any) qualification to call yourself a coach. This is why it’s so hard to find information on this career path - because in truth it’s different for everyone.

BUTT, there’s a difference between calling yourself a coach and actually transforming lives through your work. That’s what I want to help you with.

Getting started.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you are already a coach, you just may not know it yet, or you haven’t stepped into it.

Let me guess:-

You’re that friend that people come to for advice?

You love sharing insights and lessons you learn along your journey?

You get excited when people tell you about their goals (as if they were your own)

You’re pretty organised?

The first thing I realised was that stating my coaching business was less about becoming something new and more about stepping deeper into what I already was.

Knowing this takes off a huge amount of pressure!

So now let’s go through the practical steps I took, and that you can take to turn your gift (coaching) into a business:

step 1: I started coaching someone!

You’re probably think I mixed up the order right? What do you mean “coach someone”??? Shouldn’t that be like, step 15???

When you’re pursuing something new, it’s easy to get trapped into thinking you need to do a bunch of research before you get going, especially with something as ‘serious’ as coaching right?

The truth that I tell ALL of my clients is that you always move faster and more efficiently when you ‘get in the game’ so I force them to get uncomfortable and do it before they’re ready, and guess what? They achieve bloody amazing results.

look at at this way:

You can read as many books and watch as many videos about tying your shoelaces as you like; if you’re serious about mastering it - you’ve got to get in front of some laces and TRY it.

What I would advise you do is find 1-3 people in your network who you would enjoy working with. These should be people who are already pretty motivated and may be working towards a goal already.

Then all I want you to do is shoot them a text along the lines of

“Hey ———-, So I’ve decided to pursue a career in lifecoaching. I’ve seen that you’re doing some amazing things in the area of ———- If you’re interested I would love to work with you for a few weeks totally free. It would help me out a lot because it would allow me to try out some techniques that have worked in my own life, and hopefully you’ll get an amazing result from it as well. Let me know how this sounds”

Doing it for free takes a lot of pressure off of you, but still gives you the benefit of actually experiencing what it would be like to coach someone.

step 2: I started sharing

If you’re serious about starting your coaching business, then it can’t be a secret.

You need to start serving people around you through your message and providing valuable content. Being a coach is a call to service.

It’s a call to vulnerability.

It’s a call to support.

People hire coaches that they feel connected to and people who they have already received a ton of value from. Start jumping on instagram stories, start blogging, start youtubing start reaching out to meet with people for coffee just to listen and be of service to them.

e.g. If you want to coach women to grow in self-love, starting sharing about your own journey, start sharing tips on this.

This will get you into the heart space of a coach and means that when you do start offering your services more officially, you aren’t starting from scratch - people already associate all the things they would come to for a coach with you.

When I officially launched my paid coaching packages, people on my social media already saw me as a coach, as someone they could reach out to for advice and council. This made my journey 10x easier and more successful.

Step 3: I hired a coach.

I can’t even tell you how integral this step was for me, in progressing so efficiently in my business. Hiring a coach so early on in my journey was 100% the best thing I did.

If you’re serious about starting your coaching business (like for real this time) it makes sense on so many levels to hire a coach.

Firstly; it will give you the experience of being coached. Look at it this way; if you were trying to become a chef but had never tried restaurant food or experienced another chefs’ cooking - it would be hard for you to get very far, right?

It’s the same with coaching.

Secondly, you’re going to have a very hard time trying to convince people in the power of coaching if you yourself haven’t convinced yourself of it, by making the very same investment. I mean this on a practical and an energetic level.

Finally, a good coach will be able to show you and walk you through the most efficient way to start your coaching business. This will save you heaps of time and money in the long run.

In my 12 week programme, I work with you 1:1 to give them everything they need to launch your coaching business from a place of joy and peace. I show you how to package your services, how to run a clarity call and master sales, we go through your own mindset blocks and so much more.

You also get a bonus call with my branding expert (he has almost a decade of experience) to help you define, communicate and own your niche.

If you’re interested you can book a consultation using the button below or have a look around my website at some testimonials from other coaches I’ve worked with.

All the best with your journey. I will definitely do another post going over some info, because this is a huge topic, but I hope this was helpful.

Here for you in love and in service
